When it comes to winding down at home, there’s nothing quite like having a master retreat that embodies the spa experience. When we start on a project our goal is to create a space that he future homeowner will love. We pour over design sites, like Houzz, looking for the hottest trends in home design, and then we incorporate those trends in a way we feel is ideal for the property. At the Surfrider we chose to include a large Japanese soaking tub, enclosed shower steam room, and a private patio. The end result is, what we hope will be, a sanctuary for renewal.

The original bathroom design of this property left much to be desired. It was small and dark and lacked an inviting atmosphere. We decided to utilize one of the neighboring bedrooms to add much needed space to the master bath, giving us a lot of options for designing the ultimate bath. We were able to install a large spa shower enclosure complete with a standalone Japanese soaking tub. Japanese tubs are one of the hottest trends in bathroom design right now. Designed to allow the user to be deeply submerged in the water, it provides more therapeutic benefits to those wanting to relax away sore muscle. Not to mention the design of these tubs is simply beautiful.

For the ultimate in home therapy, we installed a steam shower. In addition to fostering relaxation and feelings of well-being, steam therapy has been shown to:
•    aid in sleep
•    alleviate common cold symptoms
•    relieve sinusitis symptoms

Steam therapy is often recommended by doctors as a natural remedy for insomnia and relief from the common cold. Not to mention, it’s just badass to have one!

When we opened up the wall to what was originally the an extra bedroom unit (See Layout Details image)  our options were to either close off access to the second staircase or leave it open. We decided to keep the door, allowing the buyer to determine how to use the loft space and whether to keep access. The loft space could be used as:

•    A home office
•    A baby nursery
•    A home fitness studio
•    Additional closet space
Or, the wall could be closed up and the space could be used as an additional bedroom. With so many options, we think the final plan should be left to the home buyer to decide what works best for them.

No retreat would be complete without a little indoor/outdoor action. We’ve been able to create a private patio space that is perfect for connecting with the outdoors. We added etched glass along the existing outdoor deck to give create a space that gives a high level of privacy buy allows for maximum sunshine and sky views. The space is perfect for relaxing with a book or for an afternoon yoga session. If you have a massage therapist who makes house calls, this would be an ideal space to relax and unwind.

The master suite also features some the basic essentials for home spa serenity:
•    Dual master vanities
•    Private commode space
•    Dual multi-jet body spray shower units
•    Abundant lighting
•    Custom tile work
•    Built-in sound system
As a bonus, the space will come complete with a flat screen television, because sometimes the best kind of relaxing involves soaking in the tub, drinking a beer, and watching the game.

What are your favorite master retreat features?

Appliances: It's not really a kitchen without them!

All of the appliances for our Beach Colony home in Del Mar have been ordered! It would have been easy to simply choose all Viking appliances, but we spent a little extra time putting together what we feel is the greatest appliance package and layout. Here are a few appliance highlights:
Picture
Refrigeration: Nothing is worse than getting ready to prepare an epicurean delight, only to open the fridge and realize your ingredients are lacking in freshness. Any refrigerator can keep food cold, but we chose to install the Liebherr  RB1410 because this German-engineered  marvel is internationally known for its ability to keep food fresher, longer. It’s equipped with a top of the line ventilation system which provides better air circulation, which translate to better kept food.

Freezer/Wine Cabinet: Also from Liebherr, this freezer/wine cabinet unit is everything you could hope for in a freezer. It’s one thing to simply keep food frozen, but this unit is equipped with SuperFrost technology that allows it to drop to -26°F allowing for flash freezing. Combine that with its NoFrost feature and you have one incredible freezer. If that wasn’t enough, it also has a 34 bottle wine storage compartment complete with two separately controlled temperature zones. You can trust that when you go to pop that cork, your wine will be perfectly chilled.

Both the refrigerator and freezer are 24 inches. There total size equals that of a standard 48 in combo unit but provides for a more efficient use of space.

You have to check out what a great product this is http://www.liebherr-appliances.com/

Dishwasher: I’ve yet to meet the person who looks forward to doing dishes at the end of a fabulous dinner party with friends. Yet, it’s one of those tedious things in life that must be done. We’ve found a dishwasher that makes the process a little more enjoyable. The Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer series features two independent dishwashing drawers, essentially giving two dishwashers in one unit.

We’ve taken that a step further by installing two units, giving four separate dish washing drawers; we like to call this the “Double Double”! You can wash your pots, plates, and stemware in a separate drawer, ensuring that everything is cleaned at the right setting.

Think about it, you don’t even have to put your dishes away if you don’t want because you will always have room for your dirty dishes and always have clean dishes available.

Our favorite thing about this dishwasher is one you won’t find in the manual. When entertaining guests, the racks can be removed and the drawers filled with ice, serving a built in cooler! As the ice melts it drains out. No watery cooler mess to clean and plenty of storage for drinks. How cool is that!

Range/Oven/Microwave: For these, we went with Viking. Need I say more?!

{Stay tuned for an update on the master bath!}
